TPC Landscape Receives 2009 Best of Burnsville Award
U.S. Commerce Association™s Award Plaque Honors the Achievement
WASHINGTON D.C., June 8, 2009 -- TPC Landscape has been selected for the 2009 Best of Burnsville Award in the Landscape Contractors category by the U.S. Commerce Association (USCA).
The USCA "Best of Local Business" Award Program recognizes outstanding local businesses throughout the country. Each year, the USCA identifies companies that they believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community.
Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2009 USCA Award Program focused on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the USCA and data provided by third parties.

EMERALD ASH BORER
As I’m sure you have heard the dreaded Emerald Ash Borer is now firmly established itself in Minnesota. Make no mistake, this is a very aggressive beetle. Virtually all ash trees growing in the area where the beetle is known to occur are at risk. Top Choice is currently acting as aggressively to help prevent the infestation of the Emerald Ash Borer within our communities. The time to act is right now. Our preventative maintenance program will help save many mature ash trees in our area. To do nothing will leave your trees at risk for quarantine which will ultimately result in the removal and disposal of your trees. Please call our office today for a quote.
KSTP Design Home
We have been actively involved with the KSTP Design home for the past 3 years. We were really excited about the 2008 design. You can visit the KSTP website for videos, articles and photos of the design in progress, and the completed project, www.KSTP.com. The Design Home 2008 benefits the Families of SMA charity, which is a charity close to our hearts, www.SMA.org . TPC Landscape is involved in a number of charities including:
Managing your lawn during a drought
The obvious answer to drought stress is to apply water. Deep, infrequent watering to the depth of the root system is the ideal situation. This should be done when lawns show the first signs of drought stress, such as wilting, darkening color and footprints remaining after walking across the lawn. A variety of factors, including budgets, site factors, and watering restrictions all might make this impossible.
When and Why You Should Water
Natural rainfall is not enough for two reasons: it doesn’t ensure an adequate amount of water and isn’t distributed evenly enough. This is particularly true when the lawn has just been fertilized.
A good rule of thumb is that a lawn requires an inch of water per week. A rain gauge is the easiest way to determine how much water each part of your lawn gets. This doesn’t mean that you merely put one seventh of an inch per day. The watering should soak into a depth of five or six inches.
Watering too frequently can cause more annual weeds, shallow grass roots and more chance of disease due to constant moisture. Too much watering will replace oxygen in the soil and the grass will die.
Factors to Consider
- Shade - More water is required under trees since they take a lot of moisture out of the soil.
- Soil Type & Condition - One inch of water penetrates 12 inches into sandy soil. The same amount will soak in six to 10 inches in loam and only four inches in clay. You will need to adjust your water accordingly. Compacted soil will be more likely to allow water to run off and requires core aeration to remedy.
- Slopes - A slope allows water to run off rather than soak in. It also means that there is more evaporation due to exposure to the sun if facing south or west
- Weather - How often and how much has it been raining? Again, a rain gauge is helpful.
Bottom Line
When is your lawn getting enough water? Check for wilting around noon. If you can walk across the lawn and leave footprints in the grass, it needs water.
What is the best way to get quack grass out of the lawn?
If you have only a few clumps or patches of these perennial grasses, you may be able to successfully dig them out and replace with either new seed or sod.
Another approach to eliminating these weeds is to spot treat the area, using an herbicide known as glyphosate (Ortho Kleenup or Monsanto Roudup). This is a non-selective kind of herbicide. That is, it will kill or damage any green plant, including desirable lawn grasses or garden plants. Glyphosate must be used when the plants are actively growing. The chemical is most effective when temperatures are between 60 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Preferably, no rainfall should occur for at least 24 hours after application. The plans in the treated areas will turn yellow, and, ultimately, brown. These areas can be reseeded or re-sodded after seven to 10 days. Remember, always read and follow pesticide and herbicide label directions. For more information, give us a call!
Top Choice Lawn Care
The Evolution of Top Choice Lawn Care (TPC’s sister company) In 1986 I started TPC Landscape (Ticen’s Pro Care) out of my garage in Bloomington. I had one pickup and two lawn mowers. My first clients were Shakey’s Pizza, Embers restaurants and some smaller apartments in the area. I worked my tail off and soaked up as much information about this business that I possibly could. Slowly I began to grow my business by providing quality work at a fair price. I also began to surround myself with some of the finest people anybody could dream of working with; many of these people are still with me today. Its is because of them that I attribute the success of this company. Since the start of TPC Landscape we have grown to maintain numerous town home associations in the southern metro area (lawn mowing, snow plowing and fertilizing, etc). We have also built up a large design-build landscape department that services many beautiful homes in the area. We offer complete landscape services on new construction and existing homes. This includes irrigation installation and repair, paver patios, retaining walls, plant design and installation, ponds and waterfalls.
Top Choice fertilizer came about because while driving home, I saw a sign that a lawn fertilizing company left behind after an application had been made. I watched that lawn for a couple of weeks to see the results of the application; basically there were none. That poor homeowner had unfortunately paid for nothing. The weeds didn’t die and the grass did not green up. My employees and I have been fertilizing on a commercial scale for years and have turned some of the worst dandelion fields into golf course quality turf. It absolutely drove me crazy to see this take place, especially in my own neighborhood. It was then that I decided to offer our quality fertilizing program to the single family homeowner. Our philosophy was, and still is, to use only the finest turf products available and to put them down at the proper rate (no skimping). We first started out using the name TPC Landscape and it worked out well, but I wanted to differentiate our landscape services from our fertilizer division Top Choice Lawn Care. Since then we have grown our fertilizing services by consistently providing you, the customer, with the quality products and service we promised you. I would like to thank you personally for being our customer and I will do everything in my power to keep it that way.
